Strabag Kunstforum Artcollection Vopava Catharina 01

Catharina Vopava (Vienna 1974) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Gunter Damisch. In 2001, the artist received the Bauholding Kunstförderpreis, the predecessor of the STRABAG Artaward. Peter Weiermair wrote in his jury statement about Catharina Vopava: “The main prize was awarded to Catharina Vopava; with her sensuous painting style, she presented large-format works reminiscent of magnified details from Bonnardian interiors, the luminous painting of Californians like Richard Diebenkorn or Wayne Thiebaud’s cake cornucopia. In her paintings, which take objects imbued with a strong sensory charge – slices of cake – as the point of departure, Vopava highlights details that evoke an abstract impression and enters into a formal exploration of both the delicate colour palette and the substantive semantics. The entire jury was impressed by the artist’s fully fledged painterly talent, noting her palpable ›delight in painting‹, the sensuality of this project, as well as the consistent quality of all three works submitted.” In 2013, Catharina Vopava's works were presented along with works by her father Walter Vopava as part of the exhibition "Fathers_Daughters" at the STRABAG Artlounge.
