The Swiss Christina Zurfluh (Zug 1961) studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. With her heavy works consisting of up to 70 acrylic layers, she breaks the boundaries of painting and takes it into a sculptural dimension. During the painting process, Zurfluh notes the color of each layer in her “color diary” so that she can later locate the colors and retrieve them from the background. For the artist, these notes can be read like a code that accompanies the process of her painting. Like a geologist, Christina Zurfluh subsequently removes the layers of paint partially and, through her analytical approach, reveals a view of the deeper layers of the painting. In 1996 the artist was awarded the Bauholding Kunstförderpreis, the predecessor of the STRABAG Artaward.
