Strabag Kunstforum Artcollection Sengl Peter 07

Peter Sengl (Unterbergla/AT 1945) studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Characteristic of Sengl's artworks is that the figures - preferably literary figures, musicians, celebrities, as well as himself and his wife Susi - are always clamped in a system of chains or rods, bound and constrained. Sometimes body parts are even pierced, amputated or alienated. Yet for all the brutality that seems to befall them, they never look suffering; rather, they appear calm, serene, and charismatic. The vulnerability of man, his embedding in social constraints, the imprisonment of one's own existence, the breaking out of the norm and the demonstration of freedom are themes that characterize Peter Sengl's works. The artist's picture titles are also unusual, twisting and interweaving words and meanings and thus possibly offering a first approach to interpretation, even if this is seen rather cautiously by the artist himself.
