Hubert Schmalix (Graz 1952) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Maximilian Melcher and has been professor of painting there since 1997. Together with Gunter Damisch, Siegfried Anzinger, Herbert Brandl, Alois Mosbacher and Erwin Bohatsch, he belonged to the "Junge Wilden" (Young Wild Ones), whose painting was expressive, abstract and color-intensive. Schmalix's early work was characterized by a particular preference for the human figure. After longer stays in the Philippines and the USA, the artist's style and range of themes changed, and his works became more concrete, reduced, and structured in their pictorial composition. Color plays an important role in Schmalix's works, it is used in contrasting and luminescent ways. Ochre colors, purple, red and blue tones dominate. Bucolic landscapes, still lifes, portraits of his wife, ornamental patterns and nudes can be found in drawn or painted form in his current work. Hubert Schmalix lives and works in Los Angeles and Vienna.
