Hannah Stippl (Vienna 1968) studied philosophy and art history at the University of Vienna as well as graphic arts at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, where she received her doctorate in 2011 in the field of landscape theory. In 2001 she was the winner of the Bauholding Kunstförderpreis, the predecessor of the STRABAG Artaward. At the interface between image and ornament, Hannah Stippl’s impressive landscape paintings are created from multi-layered colour patterns with botanical resonances. Back in the late 1990s, the artist’s fascination with large-scale patterned mural designs led her to experiment with historical rubber rollers, which were originally used to apply floral and ornamental patterns to walls as ›ersatz wallpaper‹. Stippl uses these rollers without regard to the repeat inherent in wallpaper and builds up her pictures layer by layer by superposing, overlapping and concealing. Colour plays an essential role in this process: the images, created sometimes on paper, sometimes on canvas or wood, and sometimes directly on the wall, deploy lush colouration and expressive sensuousness. In work shaped by multiple techniques that range from painting to printmaking, a sensitive understanding of colour and form, as well as a consistent quest to find new creative possibilities, Hannah Stippl creates contemporary yet timeless landscape paintings that are dense, electric and enigmatic.
