Johann Fruhmann (Weißenstein an der Drau 1928-1985 Lengenfeld/NÖ) studied at the Master School for Applied Arts in Graz and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Early on, Fruhmann became a member of the legendary Art-Club and also belonged to the closest circle of artists around the "Galerie im Griechenbeisl", which was founded by Fruhmann's later wife, the artist Christa Hauer. In his painting, Fruhmann found a profoundly independent, unmistakable pictorial language, which has a special stylistic position within Austrian Informel and the lyrical-gestural abstraction of the 1950s and 1960s. Structure, color, geometry, surface, texture and material formed the formal conditions for Fruhmann's entire oeuvre. In 1970, together with Christa Hauer-Fruhmann, the artist acquired Schloss Lengenfeld near Krems, which the couple revitalized over many years and operated as a studio and artists' center. Johann Fruhmann died at Lengenfeld Castle in 1985.
