Jürgen Messensee (Vienna 1936) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Sergius Pauser and is one of the most renowned Austrian painters of his generation. His poignant work cannot be assigned to any style or artistic group. The human body - the female body, to be precise - is at the center of his work, with Messensee depicting the figures in an abstracted manner. In his paintings, which the artist himself describes as figurative, the female body plays an important role: it is “virtually ideal for making my messages. It is always a new source of inspiration for me,” the artist once said. And further: “Women are simply indescribably beautiful.” Messensee's mostly large-format works impress with their colorfulness, strong, spontaneous ductus, and austere reduction. The artist lives and works in Vienna.
