Eyes Wide Shut

The STRABAG Art Forum is pleased to invite Vivian Greven to the opening of the exhibition of the 2016 STRABAG Artaward International Award winner.

Turn around, close your eyes right away! If they stood open at the sight of Gorgos, you would never return to the realm of the day! Dante Alighieri

The Gorgon, better known as Medusa petrified (Latin petrificare, from petra = rock, stone). Your face petrifies people. So she is a symbol for the erotic power of the face. We have willingly sacrificed this face to the omnipresent face in the narcissistic age of the digital. Who would want to be petrified? The face tells something about love for the other. It is an absolute end. It is absolute because it presupposes death, the surrender of the self. Byung-Chul Han
We are no longer ready for that. Our selves are overstretched and tired of themselves. The never-ending self-optimization as the supreme dogma of a culture of comparison leaves a narcissified subject. The other is no longer recognizable, since he only functions as a mirror of the self.
