Helicopter Landing

The STRABAG Art Forum is pleased to present the exhibition of the winner of the STRABAG Artaward International 2020 Shuvo Rafiqul.

In his solo exhibition Helicopter Landing, Shuvo Rafiqul devotes himself entirely to painting and describes his work process similar to that of a director. The generation of ideas usually comes about by chance, intuitively, fed from films, music, everyday experiences, media reports or impressions of the city from long walks. Shuvo Rafiqul finally combines this conglomerate of memories and their fragments into several pictures. However, there is no narrative, rather there are numerous opposites that require a constant change of perspective, both for the viewer and for the artist himself. With Rafiqul, this is determined, among other things, by his working conditions, spatially on a 2 x 2 meters of space limited: Since he does not currently have a studio, he mostly works on the floor on A4-sized pieces of cardboard, which he then puts together to form a picture. Its artistic and technical execution is strategically and precisely calculated.
Rafiqul's image contents are impulses - preserving, spinning and sorting memories without claiming to be complete. The collective, but also individual past always leaves its traces, which are sometimes paler, sometimes more haunting, sometimes more delicate, sometimes more coarsely reflected in the present. Traces of chaos and order remain on the cardboard, but as a self-contained work that offers the prospect of multiple interpretations without pleading for or against anything. Shuvo Rafiqul's works are set pieces of memory.
