Aurelia Gratzer
Shaft

In the exhibition entitled Shaft, Aurelia Gratzer - the winner of the Strabag Artaward International 2010 - shows the latest works, some of which were created in the Strabag Artstudio. Can one's own perception be questioned at all? Aren't our visual impression and its interpretation just the very own reality of each one? Is this then to be equated with the reality, perception and interpretation of our counterpart? These are the questions that Aurelia Gratzer deals with intensively in her painting; in the tension between “authentic” depiction and irritation. The spatial perception, which suddenly raises the question of perspective, and the examination of binocular vision, which is not shaped by the central perspective, play a central role. In order to examine these areas, she uses the very own medium of painting: color, two-dimensional painting surface and the brush as a painting tool. "Aurelia Gratzer - Abstract Perception", Eva Maria Bechter, 2011

Press release

Through Gratzer's process of translating her illustrations, borrowed from magazines, into the individual image surfaces and transferring them to the canvas in absolute equivalence with painterly finesse - because black surfaces only appear as such at first glance; in fact, the non-color black is not used which in turn leads to a sense of depth - the images have an enormous perceptual tension. The subtleties that lie in the individual areas of a picture can only be grasped by the viewer in all their complexity over time. If the color palette breaks up in the last works and the artist now also allows pink and blue tones, then recognize we, that the irritation in the perception for Aurelia Gratzer is far from over. The last pictures are clearer, more precisely formulated, more precisely in the treatment of the individual flat areas, sometimes also more abstract. Eva-Maria Bechter
