Eric Kressnig (Klagenfurt 1973) studied painting and graphic art at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Gunter Damisch. In his work blocks he works with strictly composed surfaces of colour, geometry and letters. He precisely arranges all the elements of a work and plays with perspective, spatiality and illusion. Despite the formal clarity and reduction that characterises his way of working, viewers are constantly challenged to question their viewing habits. Kressnig creates complex pictorial spaces through the structured and clear application of colour. In addition, the bare canvas serves him as both a colour element and a contrast. Leaving the surface free coupled with filling the canvas creates an illusion of depth. The change of perspective and visual axis also reveal further possibilities for interpretation and encourage reflection on spatiality.
