ABOUT THE ARTIST
Dr. Elisabeth Dutz, Curator Albertina, Vienna

Samuel Paučo, 1986 born in Czechoslovakia, studied at the Academy in Brno, where he still lives and works today. As a winner of the STRABAG Artaward International 2021, an exhibition is dedicated to him, providing an insight into the cosmos of this young, emerging artist. The main theme of his work is based on creating layers, from which landscapes emerge that tell or evoke stories in the minds of the viewers. He puts countless layers of paint on the canvas and subtly explores the boundaries between abstraction and figuration. Repeatedly he tapes off areas, creating painted collages. Figurative elements such as broken wooden slats or wooden huts grow out of these layers as if from a shell and stand succinctly in a deserted, barren landscape. Paučo starts to work without a fixed idea about the result; for him, the process is always paramount, which he follows intuitively. Thus, it often happens that he picks up motifs from one work in other works and traces them anew. His works are created in series – he has been devoting himself to the series "Flood" for several years, from which some works can be seen in the exhibition. The preferred medium is an expressive-gestural painting, but Paučo also works three-dimensionally; here it is just as much about layers: the visible narrow sides of paintings in depots are his inspiration.
