Before embarking on her artistic career, Iulia Nistor (Bucharest/RO 1985) studied philosophy, German philology and literature, art history and sociology. Beside this Nistor studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg and at the Städelschule in Frankfurt. In 2014, she received a recognition award from the STRABAG Artaward International. Her works are the result of a struggle between theory and practice and the outcome of a strong engagement with image and material. For Nistor, the challenge always lies in the process of creating the work. On transparent plastic film as the image carrier, the artist applies several layers of paint and partially scrapes them off again, creating a crosshatched, lively painting with a woodcut aesthetic.
