Christa Hauer-Fruhmann (Vienna 1925-2013 Lengenfeld/Lower Austria) turned to the art of the US abstract expressionists and action painting for many years after completing her artistic training at the Vienna School of Applied Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts, spending most of the 1950s in Chicago. Together with her husband, the painter Johann Fruhmann, she returned to Austria in 1960 and founded the "Galerie im Griechenbeisl", which set important accents in the Austrian art landscape for over a decade. From 1960, the couple lived and worked at Schloss Lengenfeld near Krems. In addition to her activities as a gallery owner and painter, Christa Hauer-Fruhmann was a founding member of Intakt (Internationale Aktionsgemeinschaft bildender Künstlerinnen) in 1976. Her artistic œuvre, which she all too often put aside in favor of her cultural-political commitment, is emotionally marked, vital, spontaneous, direct and full of luminous color power.
