Wolfgang Hollegha (Klagenfurt 1929) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Josef Dobrowsky and Herbert Boeckl. Wolfgang Hollegha is one of the most important representatives of abstract painting in Austria. Together with Josef Mikl, Markus Prachensky and Arnulf Rainer he founded the artist group "Nächst St. Stephan". Even though Hollegha always paints abstractly, he draws his motifs from the representational, especially from nature. Impressions and found objects from the forest inspire his large-scale works, which are created with great physical effort. Using his own technique, Wolfgang Hollegha frees the colors of an object from their representational nature and applies them to the canvas over a large area. The thin, glazed application of paint gives the paintings luminosity and makes the abstracted motifs look as if they are floating on a white chalk ground.
