Fritz Martinz (Bruck an der Mur 1924-2002 Vienna) laid the foundations of his artistic training at the School of Applied Arts in Graz before being called up for military service in 1943 - an experience that left a lasting impression on him and was also reflected in his choice of subject matter and pictorial language throughout his life. In 1947 Martinz began studying painting with Albert Paris Gütersloh at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Martinz belongs to a post-war generation of Austrian artists who, in the style of critical realism and with powerful, political imagery, negotiated an unembellished view of wartime and post-war conditions. Martinz created figures full of power and suffering - unruly, wild and unadorned. Life and death seem to be ever present in his paintings. A constant change of perspective indirectly challenges the viewer to follow the movements of those depicted, creating the impression of being in the midst of the pictorial action. Fritz Martinz once said: “I draw and paint against the lack of content and meaning of our present time! Following I work up our European history and adjust memories.” Fritz Martinz died in 2002 in Vienna and left behind a comprehensive œuvre of paintings, graphics, works on paper and sculptures.
