Andreas Urteil (Gakovo/YU 1933-1963 Vienna) is one of the outstanding Austrian sculptural positions of the 1950s and 1960s. The German-speaking Danube Swabian spent his childhood near the Hungarian border of the former Yugoslavia. In 1946 he managed to escape from a Yugoslavian internment camp to Vienna, where he first completed an apprenticeship as a stonemason and then studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts. In the master class of Prof. Fritz Wotruba (and later as his assistant) he was confronted with entirely new considerations of form and subsequently developed a profoundly independent artistic language and an extensive body of sculptural and graphic work in a relatively short time. Andreas Urteil died terminally ill at the age of only 30.
