Stefan Peters (Hasselt/BE 1978) studied at the LUCA School of Arts in Ghent and received a STRABAG Artaward International recognition award in 2016. The artist uses rhetorical devices in his paintings, such as inversions, mirror images, incisions or repetitions. The results are landscape depictions that are characterized by fairy-tale as well as apocalyptic elements - indirect light sources or scenic shadows. The works have something alienating about them, and yet they exude an almost magical attraction. The gridded landscape paintings do not correspond to a traditional landscape painting, although they may be partially reminiscent of it. Peters deconstructs the painting process and concentrates on the essential: The brushstroke. They are quick gestural movements, few brushstrokes, which he executes with acrylic paint. On white-primed and grid-covered wood, Peters strings together small landscapes at random that evoke associations with real landscapes, those of old masters, or even the negative strips of old (black-and-white) films.
