Eva Lachner (Vienna 1948) studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna with Margarethe Rader-Soulek in the Department of Decorative Design and Textile Design. From 1977-2014 she was a lecturer and head of the weaving studio at the Department Textiles - Free, Applied and Experimental Artistic Design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Eva Lachner has found her artistic means of expression in tapestry, whereby her work encompasses not only the mastery of this traditional craft, but beyond that, the experimental exploration of material and technique. The artist first sketches watercolors, which serve as color and compositional sketches for the actual creative activity at the loom. The preparatory work process also includes dyeing the wool in various shades. Lachner prefers to work on the high loom in warp densities between three and five threads per centimeter. The artist sets form and color accents by mixing the wool with mohair, silk and metal threads. By using these different materials, the artist influences the surface of her work so that it appears shiny or matte, soft or fluffy, and often entices the viewer to activate the sense of touch.
