Markus Saile (Stuttgart 1981) studied painting at the Braunschweig University of Fine Arts. He works mostly on wood, which is first sanded and then prepared with a chalk primer. The process of priming is groundbreaking for the further work steps, because it forms the basis for the application of paint. Saile uses oil paint, which he thins considerably by adding turpentine. This makes the paint dry faster and gives the artist the opportunity to apply several layers of paint to the support material in one day. The repeated coating of the wooden surface leaves behind delicate traces of color, and the thin, glazing layers of paint form iridescent color gradients full of volatility and transparency. Due to Markus Saile's working process, the color is not only visible on the surface of the painting, but also on the sides of the support material and is essential for the artist in the exhibition context. Markus Saile was one of the 2019 recognition award winner of the STRABAG Artaward International.
