Adel Dauood (Al Hasaka 1980) studied at the University of Damascus’ Institute of Fine Arts before leaving Syria in 2013 and coming to Vienna as a refugee. In his atmospherically dense paintings, the artist deals with memories and fears from the past and present, with fragments and images of war, violence, pain and death in his homeland. Dauood's figures are torn and distorted, struggling with the contradictions of life and their own inner conflicts. These fictional, human-like figures are embedded with garish colors and black outlines in large-scale, colorful, wild color spaces in which abstract and representational elements combine to create an almost surreal background. The artist works with charcoal, oil and acrylic on paper or canvas. Painting represents for him a form of rebellion against the horrors of war, but also an inner dialogue with his feelings. Adel Dauood's works have already been presented in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad, including Denmark, England, New York, Lebanon and Turkey.
