Ernst Fuchs (Vienna 1930-2015 Vienna) was, along with Arik Brauer, Rudolf Hausner, Wolfgang Hutter and Anton Lehmden, a co-founder and at the same time the most influential representative of the Viennese School of Fantastic Realism. His extensive oeuvre includes painting, graphic art, sculpture, stage sets, musical pieces and poetry. The artist's works are often charged with religious, mythical or astrological symbolism. He drew further inspiration from his involvement with the Surrealists, early Christian icon painting and many stays abroad and study trips, for example to Israel, England, Spain, Italy or the Americas. Always passionate about creating an aesthetically pleasing environment for himself and his art, Fuchs acquired the Otto Wagner Villa in Hütteldorf in the early 1970s and over time transformed it into a Gesamtkunstwerk, which can now be visited as the Ernst Fuchs Museum. Ernst Fuchs was awarded the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art and the Gold Decoration of Honor for Services to the State of Vienna, among other honors.
