Maureen Kägi (New Plymouth/NZ 1984) studied painting at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the Zurich University of the Arts. Her work includes painting, drawing, video installation and performance. Kägi's artistic exploration deals with optical and physical processes of perception - the visible and the unclassifiable - the filigree surfaces of her canvases act like screens that are constantly in motion. Viewers must pause to recognize what is depicted. The apparent blurriness is based on Kägi's artistic precision. Using acrylic and pigment pencils, she paints line after line, some of which overlap, creating a kind of grid or structure that, upon closer inspection, appears like an optical illusion. In doing so, she explores the possibilities of our vision and deals with the visual myopia in society.
